  • The Age of Self-Deception – A Reflection on 16 Years of Transport Politics

The Age of Self-Deception – A Reflection on 16 Years of Transport Politics

At the end of this year Steve Melia will retire after 16 years of researching, teaching and writing about transport and sustainability. Steve is a long term BCyC supporter and the driving force behind the influential Living Heart for Bristol initiative. He’s giving a talk on 15 December 2021 at 5pm in UWE Frenchay Campus which is sure to be insightful and entertaining and highly relevant to cycle campaigning. Much of his material was collected from trips cycling across Europe. Next year, he plans to take up to 9 months to cycle across the whole continent. Since 2005 he has advised government departments, local authorities, political…

  • Bristol Cycling 2021 survey – how can we double cycling rates?

Bristol Cycling 2021 survey – how can we double cycling rates?

We’ve opened our 2021 survey to find out what barriers there are to people cycling in the city and what can be done to help remove these barriers.  We would really appreciate your support in sharing this survey far and wide via your newsletters and social media, especially with groups which may not currently cycle. The survey is open until 30th November. The survey link is available here: https://bit.ly/BristolCyclingSurvey2021 You can find out what we learned from our 2020 survey here.

  • Can you help Bristol Cycling become a registered charity?

Can you help Bristol Cycling become a registered charity?

Bristol Cycling Campaign is a voluntary organisation working to make Bristol a great city for cycling.  We have been active for over 40 years but have never made the jump to become a registered charity (read more about us here).  We are looking someone who can help take us through the process in 2022.  We are open to a pro-bono offer from a legal firm, expert advice on a voluntary basis or paying the right person if required. This is not just a matter of filling in some forms as there will be changes required to our constitution, and to…

  • “My bike was stolen in Bristol” – we feel your pain

“My bike was stolen in Bristol” – we feel your pain

Such a sad tale of a stolen bike from new Bristol news site, BristolWorld.com. We were able to share some information and advice, including What to do if your bike is stolen and Why Bristol needs more bike hangars https://www.bristolworld.com/news/my-bike-was-stolen-in-bristol-but-i-shouldnt-be-surprised-3423192 Here are a couple of quotes from the article. It wasn’t even a very good bicycle. Bought eight years ago on the Government’s cycle to work scheme, I’d run it into the ground, to the point I was warned it was no longer safe to ride when taking it for a puncture repair at Halfords, writes BristolWorld editor Alex Ross. But…

  • Cotham Hill pedestrianisation consultation – back ‘Option A’

Cotham Hill pedestrianisation consultation – back ‘Option A’

Fantastic to see the Cotham Hill pedestrianisation consultation is out. This includes not only more space for traders, pedestrians and disabled parking bays but also separated cycle lanes on the southern section and a School Street on Aberdeen Rd! Please respond and back ‘Option A’, the most ambitious option. Below is a survey asking local people to think about three possible options for a permanent scheme. The overall the aim of any scheme will be to make it easier to walk and cycle within the local community for everyone including those with disabilities, support the local economy, and improve air…

  • Can we make cycling boring?

    Can we make cycling boring?

by Dulce Pedroso. Like many of us, Bristol Cycling member Dulce Pedroso envisions a version of Bristol where cycling is everywhere. So prevalent, in fact, that talking about cycling as a mode of transport becomes so commonplace that it’s (almost) boring. A city where everyone and their grandma cycles and no one calls you ‘brave’ for cycling the morning commute. In her quest to help make that happen, Dulce is running for election onto Cycling UK’s Board of Trustees. Here is her story in her own words… I cycled as a child and a teenager growing up in Finland but…
