Take a Stand in 2004!

Have you noticed a lack of cycle parking at your local shop, workplace or community building? Do you find yourself looking for a suitable railing or signpost to lock your bike up? If the answer is yes, then perhaps you could encourage them to do something about it.

A scheme called 'Take a Stand' provides free bike stands to community based organisations across Bristol. To be eligible for the scheme a group or organisation needs to be able to do the following:

  • Site the cycle parking stands on property belonging to the group.
  • Site the stands in a convenient, well-lit location agreed with Life Cycle UK
  • Be responsible for installing the stands

They can apply for up to 2 "Sheffield" type stands for free. Each stand holds up to two bikes. Cyclists lean their own bikes against the stand and secure them using their own D-lock or cable lock.

There are 2 different types of stand available. A 'sink-in' stands which is sunk into the ground and then backfilled with concrete. A 'bolt-down' stand which can be bolted down to smooth, solid concrete surfaces only. Additional stands can be purchased at a cost of £75 per stand.

The 'Take a Stand' scheme has been running for 6 years and has so far provided 300 stands to many hundreds of groups across Bristol. Clients have included Bristol Ferry boat company, St Paul's Youth & Sports Community Outreach, Windmill Hill City Farm and Yoga West.
