Improvements to the cycle path between Pill and Portishead
North Somerset have given planning approval for improvements to the cycle path between Pill and Portishead that passes under the M5 alongside the derelict railway. The present railway ballast path will be surfaced and the entire route from the Avon path given improved signing as part of Sustrans NCN route 33, which will continue southwards. If in the future the railway is re-opened, that section of path will have to be given up.
The existing alternative route to this path is a road through Portbury, which has light motor traffic apart from peak weekday hours. I hope that in the peak-hour rat-run it will not be too unsafe for experienced cyclists to continue to use the road; any such commuters will be helping to maintain the profile of cycling, and showing that cyclists will not be pushed off the roads - and may remind a few motorists to try the healthier option for themselves.

Calling North Somerset cyclists!
I am now CTC 'Right to Ride Network Representative for North Somerset' and need some help! I am compiling a list of cycle users who live in, know, or work in North Somerset. If this is you (or someone you know), you may be able to help in two ways - 1) as eyes and ears to tell me about cycling issues that you notice in your location - all the things that lead to people rejecting cycling because it is perceived to be inconvenient, dangerous, poorly signed etc. 2) as a discussion group and sounding board for suggestions to North Somerset Council - who are puzzled that, despite their best efforts, the numbers of cyclists have gone down whereas the local transport plan requires them to increase.
In North Somerset and interested? Please email me on sjkinsella@iee.org with 'cycling' within the subject, or phone or write. Include your address. The English Regions Cycling Development Team summary report on all councils, just published, says North Somerset needs 'broad consultation' in 2004 - let's give it to them!
